Beyond the Beige Walls and Printer Chatter: How I Discovered My Perfect Workspace as a Digital Nomad

I could make you dream of working by the pool or on the beach but you and I both know that it’s highly impractical and rarely any good work will happen in those settings.

Too much sunlight to see anything properly on the screen,  too risky with others jumping in and out of the pool and often too noisy to focus on your laptop when others are having fun around.

You probably dreamt of freedom when you contemplated the idea of becoming a digital nomad – the freedom to work from anywhere, to explore new horizons, and to break free from the constraints of traditional office life.

For many of us, myself included, the journey to finding the perfect workspace was a transformative one, marked by moments of discovery, experimentation, and ultimately, liberation. But most likely it started in your flat on the kitchen table!

Leaving behind the confines of the corporate world was a pivotal moment in my life.

As I said goodbye to the beige walls and the incessant noise of the server room next to my desk, I started my quest to find a workspace that lived up to the expectations of my newfound sense of freedom and autonomy.

Little did I know that this would lead me to some unexpected places and discover a whole new world of possibilities.

From Home Office to Open Skies: Embracing Flexibility

My first foray into the world of remote work saw me setting up shop in my flat here in Argentina.

With nothing more than a laptop and a somewhat reliable internet connection, I transformed my dining table into my makeshift office.

It was a modest setup, to be sure, but there was something undeniably liberating about being able to work from home with a mate (hot infusion drink from Argentine) in my hands.

But as enticing as the idea of working from home was, I soon found myself craving a change of scenery. I miss some of the noise from the office and seeing some friendly faces during the day.

Enter the coworking space – a sanctuary for digital nomads like myself, seeking refuge from the isolation of the home office. Stepping into my first coworking space felt like stepping into a whole new world. The vibrant energy, the buzz of productivity, and the sense of community were invigorating.

Here, amidst a diverse group of like-minded individuals, I found inspiration, collaboration, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Yet, as much as I enjoyed the camaraderie of the coworking space, I longed for something more.

Beyond the Walls: Unconventional Workspaces

However, the beauty of being a digital nomad lies in the ability to break free from the confines of traditional workspaces altogether.

I also had a period when I worked from libraries. I spent over a year going twice a week to the library of the French Institute in my town. I went to a dozen libraries in my town but most of the time the wifi wasn’t great and because some were very old buildings with thick walls even my hotspot network wasn’t great.

On sunny days, my office relocated my lush tropical garden, the gentle warmth of the sun and chirping birds providing the perfect soundtrack for tackling my to-do list. The kitchen table became a war room for creative brainstorming sessions, fueled by a pot of steaming tea and a plate of freshly baked cookies.

Once I embraced this lifestyle, it allowed me to work from anywhere – whether it was a bustling coffee shop in Paris when visiting family back home, a serene beach in Brittany, or the comfort of my own home.

Of course, finding my perfect workspace didn’t happen overnight.

It took time and experimentation to discover what environments and setups worked best for me.

Along the way, I encountered my fair share of challenges and setbacks – from unreliable internet connections to noisy neighbors and everything in between. But with each obstacle, I gained valuable insights into what I needed to thrive as a digital nomad.

One of the most transformative aspects of my journey as a digital nomad has been the ability to redefine what “best place to work” means to me.

The Freedom to Choose: The True Definition of “Best Place”

The truth is, there’s no single “best place” to work as a digital nomad. The beauty lies in the freedom to choose. My workday can be tailored to my mood, my productivity levels, and the task at hand.

Want deep focus – head to the quiet corner of a coworking space. Craving inspiration – take a walk in the park and let nature spark your creativity. Feeling a creative block – grab your laptop and find a cozy cafe to brainstorm with a steaming cup of latte.

This freedom to choose, this ability to design my ideal work environment around my needs, that’s the true game-changer. It’s a constant dance of exploration and discovery, uncovering hidden gems in unexpected places.

The best place to work from isn’t a location; it’s a mindset, a state of being where work becomes a seamlessly integrated part of a life filled with adventure, flexibility, and endless possibilities.
